5 Summer Skincare Tips

Beautiful young woman outdoors on a sunny day San Diego and Encinitas,CA

While the summer season is perfect for having some fun in the sun, maintaining clear and glowing skin isn’t always possible. The constant exposure to hot weather and the sun can result in clogged pores, dark spots, and sunburns.

Maintaining a consistent skincare routine all year round can help prevent these issues, but a few tweaks during the summertime can really step up and improve your skincare game!

Keep reading to learn more about 5 tips that can help you keep that youthful glow during the summertime!

Always wear SPF

Having nice tanned skin may look amazing but, constant sun exposure can actually age your appearance more quickly. Wearing SPF daily, especially during the summertime, acts as a barrier to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer and skin aging. It’s best to apply SPF every two hours to ensure your skin’s safety from pesky sunburns and wrinkles!

When looking for a broad-spectrum SPF, make sure to choose from ones that are SPF 30 or higher. Anything lower than that won’t provide the same protection or benefits.

Many of us at Revive LOVE Alastin’s Hydratint SPF 36. This formulation is creamy, and hydrating, with a subtle tint that gives you a radiant glow from within. Another staple on our shelves that many of our clients love is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50, or its non-tinted sibling – Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50. We have many different sunscreens available for purchase at Revive, and we are happy to help you find the right one for you!

Continue to moisturize

Unfortunately, there’s this common misconception that for those who have oily skin, moisturizer will make your skin even more oily. Thankfully that’s not true and is actually quite the opposite! When your skin is dehydrated and stripped from being constantly washed, your skin will produce more oils to counterbalance the lack of moisture.

While you don’t have to ditch moisturizer altogether, it might be best to use a lighter one rather than a rich cream during the winter months. A great option is SkinMedica’s Ultra Sheer Moisturizer, which will provide you with lightweight hydration all day long!

Invest in a good Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is great year-round, but is even more important during the summer. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects our skin from the free radicals it encounters throughout the day, and can also brighten your complexion, stimulate collagen production, and give your SPF an extra boost of protection.

You can layer a few drops between cleansing and moisturizing and you’ll have this boost for the rest of the day!

Use retinol in moderation

Even though we’re big fans of Retinol here at Revive, if not used properly in a skincare routine, it can cause irritation to the skin. Overusing retinol or applying it in the morning can cause dry skin and sun sensitivity. You’re more likely to get a sunburn or have even oilier skin than intended! It’s best to apply retinol at night after cleansing and only use a pea size amount. Start slowly and then build up as you go!

Make sure your products are Non-comedogenic

Clogged pores can lead to breakouts due to a build-up of oil and sweat on the skin. An easy way to prevent this is to use non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products.

To keep your pores clear, you can incorporate ingredients to combat acne-prone and oily skin. A few ingredients that are beneficial are salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, and niacinamide.
