The holiday season is all about love and cheer, but we can’t forget what cold weather, added stress and dietary changes can do to your skin.
Add in the holiday parties where it’s hard to not take eating and drinking to the extreme, and even your skin will start to rebel.
To make sure your skin stays in the best shape for the holiday season, we’re here to offer some ways you can prepare for the crazy months ahead.
1. Bulk up the Hydration
As the cooler temperatures roll in, it’s time to bring out the super hydrating products and add a thicker moisturizer to your skin regimen. While you’re ramping up the moisturizing game, be sure to pay attention to how your skin starts to react.
If you start suffering from more breakouts, RN Polly Moore of Revive Med Spa in San Diego suggests using a thicker cream only at night and a lightweight moisturizer during the day.
Also, adding a Vitamin C serum can help brighten and diminish any hyperpigmentation spots the summer sun may have caused. And don’t forget the delicate eye area – be sure to introduce a moisturizing eye cream to keep those peepers pampered!
Staying hydrated from the inside-out should be a priority all four seasons as well, so make sure to drink enough water to keep your skin glowing year-round. For an added boost we also recommend facial treatments like the HydraFacial, which cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and hydrates the skin to keep you glowing through the holiday season.
2. Reduce Exfoliation
With the drier weather comes the dreaded drier skin. Exfoliation is a key component to containing any dead skin buildup, but you must proceed with caution. “You can exfoliate, but you want to be careful not to over-exfoliate, because you could be doing your skin a disservice and doing the opposite of what your skin really needs,” RN Polly Moore of Revive Med Spa in San Diego said.
“Instead, try incorporating a thicker moisturizer and make sure to keep drinking water!”
3. Polishing Peels
The winter months are a key time to indulge in any treatments you regrettably had to avoid during the sunny summer months. Treatments like the Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser, which combines two-hybrid fractional lasers to take years of damage off the skin (with less downtime than traditional laser treatments); an IPL treatment which uses broadband light to alleviate sun and age spot damage; and Microneedling, which uses small needles to prick the skin and generate new collagen and skin tissue.
All are great options to give your skin the regular polishing it needs to really glisten.
To get the most out of your luminous look, we recommend doing these procedures two weeks before any major event or an upcoming holiday.
4. Keep Using Sunscreen
A big mistake we see people make is decreasing the use of sunscreen as the winter months roll around. Don’t let the cooler days fool you! The sun is still throwing down damaging UVA and UVB rays, and the skin is still absorbing it – especially down here in Southern California.
We always recommend using a separate sunscreen and not relying on what’s solely in your moisturizer or makeup. That is never strong enough! Revive Med Spa has mineral and even powder options, so there are no excuses when it comes to skin protection!
