Not Just for Beauty: According to Study, Botox Could Help Alleviate Depression

As much as we all love those Botox treatments that make us look refreshed on the outside – these treatments can be benefiting us on the inside as well.

At a study at the University of San Diego, Botox has been shown to aid in the effects of depression. This study interviewed  40,000 people who explained the side effects they experienced with Botox. They discovered that Botox can boost your mood and reduce the risk of depression by 88%!

The study behind this explains that we could potentially be “freezing” areas of the nervous system causing our emotions to regulate. The study included patients that had eight different areas of concern and were injected in various areas including the forehead, neck, limbs and bladder.  The results, published in the journal Scientific Reports, found that those who had Botox at six of the eight sites – not just the forehead – were between 40% and 88% less likely to report depression.

Depression takes on all forms and can affect our bodies and minds. Feeling isolated from friends, family, co-workers and normal activities during this time can affect our sense of well-being and lead to not feeling like ourselves.

Many times, patients rely on medication or therapy sessions to relieve their depression but over time these methods can tend to become ineffective and expensive. Botox is administered in one 15-30 minute appointment and can last up to 3 to 4 months while medications are often taken every day. With the progression of Botox treatments, this will definitely be more convenient than taking a pill or two a day.

We know Botox to be used for mostly aesthetic procedures, but can it become more than that? Dr. Ruben Abagyan states, “For years, clinicians have observed that Botox injected for cosmetic reasons seems to ease depression for their patients.” Dr. Abagayan also reveals that it didn’t matter where the Botox was injected, it still showed positive results when referring to depression. Keep in mind that this has not been proven to cure depression, but has shown to be  successful in easing patients who receive this procedure.
