Living in Southern California, spring is pre-summer and it’s time to start prepping our skin for all the sun exposure that’s coming it’s way! Whether it’s at the beach, a hike, a pool day with the kids, or a full day of rides at the theme park, the sun will be beating down on you, and you should be prepared. The most important things on your vanity this spring should be antioxidants and SPF, those are an absolute must. However, there are a few other things to keep in mind when putting together your skincare routine this spring. In the winter, our skin tends to be dry, so we gravitate toward products that hydrate and nourish our skin. However, during the spring and summer months, our skin tends to produce more of its oil so it’s important to properly cleanse after a long day’s work. The SkinCeuticals Purify Cleanser has glycolic acid to help remove any impurities built-up throughout the day – leaving it refreshed, renewed, and conditioned. Those with more sensitive skin types can opt for Obagi’s Foaming Gel cleanser – it delivers the same great results but has key ingredients to help soothe and calm the skin such as Aloe and Oat Amino Acids.
Now, Vitamin C first thing in the morning after cleansing – IS A MUST! Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects our skin from the free radicals it encounters throughout the day. What are free radicals? Think pollution, dust, smoke, exhaust from cars, and many various chemicals that roam the air looking for unprotected skin to steal an electron from. They won’t find any on your skin though, because you’ll have read this blog and know better! Vitamin C can also brighten your complexion, stimulate collagen production, and give your SPF an extra boost of protection. There are various formulations catered to different needs and skin types. SkinCeuticals is known for its three main formulas: CE Ferulic which caters to normal to dry skin, with Vitamin E and Ferulic acid to provide hydration and extra antioxidant protection. Phloretin CF caters to oily or combination skin types and those looking to target any present pigmentation in their skin. Lastly, Silymarin CF is ideal for those who are acne-prone due to the 2% Salicylic acid that will aid in controlling oil production.
When it comes to moisturizers, a lighter formulation is the most convenient for many. SkinCeuticals Metacell B3 is a fan favorite and a staple in many of my facials. It is a go-to due to its 5% niacinamide and a firming concentration of tripeptides. Together they visibly improve early signs of photoaging by increasing cell turnover to resurface the skin, help reclarify and even skin tone, and improve the appearance of wrinkles and surface elasticity. And last, but certainly not least – SPF! The two things to look for in an SPF are that it’s MINERAL (meaning the main ingredients are either Zinc or Titanium Dioxide) and that it has an SPF of at least 30.
